Eagle-Bearers
and the one who jumped overboard
One of the most prestigious roles a person could have in the Roman army was that of the aquilifer. AKA the guy in charge of carrying the prized Roman eagle.

A standard-bearer's uniform was a little different than the rest of the legionaries.
Standards were used by the Romans as rallying points. In the chaos of battle, the Romans would center around standard-bears, who in turn encouraged the legionaries to push forward.
One of the most famous accounts of this happened in Caesar's Gallic war:
There were many different types of standard-bearers (or signifers) in the Roman army, but only the guy who had the eagle standard was the aquilifer. Aquila is Latin for eagle.
